Florida Trail Kickoff

The Florida Trail Hikers Alliance has cancelled our 2018 Florida Trail Kickoff campout at Trail Lakes Campground, originally scheduled for Jan 5-7.

Because of hurricane damage and flooding in Florida’s peninsula, we suggest thru-hikers consider going southbound in 2018.

We encourage those planning a northbound thru-hike to consider arranging a ride to the I-75 MM 63 rest area to skip the southernmost 30 miles (and return to it later) of the trail if water levels remain high in the Big Cypress Swamp. The Big Cypress Swamp is one of the most strenuous parts of the Florida Trail. Its difficulty should not be underestimated.

An annual event to gather hikers together at the beginning of thru-hiker season, the Florida Trail Kickoff encourages long distance hiker camaraderie while providing low-cost camping as well as shuttle support to the trail terminus. We look forward to hosting it again in 2019, weather depending. Here are recaps of our FT Kickoff events from prior years.
